Indranil Indu from Kokata writes to Kolahal Travel Guide: Date of visit: 30-11-2010 to 01-12-2010 We had a wonderful experience during the visit at Mandarmoni. The journey started on 30-11-2010 and ended on 01-12-2010. It was a short but refreshing trip to the lonely beach. My family and one of my friend's family enjoyed the hospitality and eco-friendly atmosphere of Hotel Sonar Bangla. I particularly had researched on Mandarmoni. The accommodation and crowd were the main factors to select the venue and accommodation as we were with our parents. At the end of the research, I decided to escape to Mandarmoni and that part of Golden Bengal. It was less than five hours from Kolkata by our private bahon. At the entrance to Mandarmoni beach, there was a terrible smell of sutki mach (dried fish) which makes it hard to breath. We traveled on the motorable beach in a Tata Sumo. There are several resorts on the beach. After a ride of 5-7 minutes by car along the sea on the left hand side, Hotel Sonar Bangla welcomed us. As we visited on a week day, all the hotel agents were calling us for a suitable place. But we were rigid on Sonar Bangla as it has a three storied building, which enabled us to enjoy the beauty of the Bay of Bengal with the bed tea. After some negotiation we booked three non AC rooms (as the weather was cool and pleasant) for 4000 bucks including one extra bed & taxes for one day. Check in time 12 noon, check out time 11 A.M. The hotel is widely spread with lots of sources of amusement including a badminton court, carom boards, a dekhi, a dolna, resting chairs and lot of green grass. From evening to night all the spaces of the garden are equipped with music stations. It was a really wonderful feeling with the combination of sea beach, green grass, music and relaxation at the front side garden. The best room is room no 305. You can count the sea waves lying on the comfortable bed. Some major positive observations:

Raktim Banerjee writes (Oct 26, 2008): "We did not make any hotel reservation before coming to the place. During driving through the beach you can see a lot of hotels. We stayed at Hotel Sonar Bangla. It is not the hotel you think, it is not owned by ITC. The room rent was Rs 1500 per night for a double bed, non AC room. The room was quite big and carpeted. A sofa set and a tea table were in the room. This room was just beside the beach. Most of the other hotels maintained a distance of about 500 m from the beach, but this was within 30 meters of the beach. At the time of high tide, sea water came to the gate of the hotel. The hotel restaurant was not in the final stage, but they were serving at the room. The room was good, but the food was very costly." |

Bubu writes (in HolidayIQ.com on 13th January, 2010): "The front desk personnel are very poorly trained and lack the politeness expected to handle guests. The rooms are real good with the super deluxe rooms having an astounding view but the room service is real bad, (you wont get fresh towels and sanitaries unless you ask specifically). The restaurant is huge with a great view of the sea but the furniture and the washrooms are really pitiful with food strewn on the floor long after the guests have dined. (However, there is a small kid there with a sunny countenance and ready smile serving us who was the only ray of light in the gloomy restaurant). Overall, a poor staff and service making a good-looking and greatly located hotel look real shabby. Moreover, if you have bad luck, the restaurant would be blasting off songs till the middle of the night (it was not much of a concern for us as we were on a school reunion, but still for information sake, be aware!)" |
