Saradindu Ghosh from Kolkata writes to Kolahal Travel Guide:
Date of visit: 15th November 2013

We began our journey by boarding Rupashi Bangla Express from Santragachi Jn. in the middle of November 2013. We planned for a small weekend break from the hustle of the city to refresh our minds.

The first destination was Bankura. After four hours of train journey we reached Bankura station at around 10:30 AM. From there it was about another three hours journey to Mukutmanipur by bus. There was not enough direct bus to reach Mukutmanipur, so the best option is to change one at Khatra. It’s half an hour away from Khatra. (Another option is to take a taxi from Bankura.) We reached there at around 1:30 PM.

The resort is a couple of minutes from the bus stand. After entering the resort you will be welcomed by a flight of stairs. Be prepared to ascend around hundred stairs if not more. The property itself is in the lap of a small hill. There are ample greenery and the whole place is filled with such serenity that you will be refreshed immediately.

We had booked Piyal, one of the twin cottages of the Sal-Piyal combo.
All of the cottages are named after such plants.. Amloki-Hortuki… Tal-Tamal… Anantamul-Satamul, etc. The cottages are huge, though I think Sal-Piyal is the best option. The cafeteria is about twenty-thirty steps below. The food is basic. They do serve complementary tea in the morning. For every other meal you have to descend to the cafeteria no matter where you stay. They don’t serve food in the rooms.

There are a few view points inside the resort and all of them do give a nice view of the dam and the surrounding. You will get motorised van rickshaws for sightseeing and all of their drivers double as guides, who will be proud to show you around… but please do bargain before zeroing on any. A boat ride on the dam is a must especially in the time of dusk and dawn to observe the continuous play of colours. The whole place itself is quite nice, but there are many things which need serious attention from the respective authorities to develop this place as a happening tourist spot.

Pros
  1. The place itself is very good; the dam is huge and marvellous. Amazing to learn it is completely man made.
  2. The WBFDC Nature Resort is one of the best options. Within reasonable budget and very near the dam. It has the best location.
  3. The whole property of WBFDC is very good. The cottages are spacious with all the basic necessities
Cons
  1. Transportation needs to be developed if this place really wants to put its footprint in the tourism map. The local bus service cannot be trusted at all.
  2. More support from the authority is required if more crowd pours in. Now it is covered by the helpful locals.
  3. The cafeteria of the nature resort should serve at least dinner at the rooms. It’s not always possible to descend so many steps to reach the dining hall. Even elders have to do the same thing.
  4. More maintenance is required to keep the rooms in a good condition. Water leaked from the washroom to our adjoining dining room. (No idea why that room was there.) Also, we found broken furniture and filthy rags dumped there. Had to keep it closed for our entire duration of the stay.
  5. Please note till November 2013, there were no ATM present in the entire Mukutmanipur area. The nearest one is at Khatra. Half an hour away. Be prepared to carry ample cash or move to and fro to Khatra.
