Dr Debaleena De from Kolkata writes to Kolahal Travel Guide:
Dates of visit: March 26-27, 2014 (Kanchenjhau Homestay)

I have no words in my dictionary to express my feelings just after my Chatakpur visit. All the trees in Chatakpur are standing like a saint for a long decade. They silently speak to me, Remember Dr De, it is a Devabhumi, not Bhogobhumi. It is not a gossip-world, it is a spiritual-world. So, if you keep silent we believe that you must get some divine inner light from God. Within a few hours, my inner eyes are open and I feel that we came to a real heaven.

The family whose rooms were given to us for shelter, they are really great. They are not men but they are real deities of Heaven. They are poor but broadminded, co-operate, and compassionate to us. We never forget their love, especially SANJAT (Student of Class: X) and his mother, sister (Class: XII) and never forget the sincere good driver.

Our Chatakpur Homestay Experience

We stayed two nights and nearly two days at Chatakpur Homestay,
in Norbu Sherpa's home. It was a lovely experience. The trek up to the home from the metal road looked daunting but even my inlaws (84 and 76 years of age) had no serious problems with the help from Norbu. We had two rooms and three each stayed in one room. There were more than enough blankets and room heaters in each room. The toilet was very clean with geyser for hot water. Most of the time we were outside in the sunny courtyard which has a full view of the Kanchanjungha (we were unlucky as the weather was a little dull). The sunrise point is very near a little up.

Norbu took us for a small trek below the eco huts where there was a small lake. But most of all what we liked was the warm and friendly behaviour of Norbu, his wife Pabitra, their daughters Nimphuti and Nikila, as well as the grandparents. We really felt like we were in their household. The meals were very nice with eggs in morning, lunch, and chicken at dinner and even tea with hot fries in the evening. The place was very quiet and peaceful. Throughout our lives we will remember and cherish the warm hospitality of the family of Norbu Sherpa and hope we will return to Chatakpur in near future.

I had not heard the name of Chatakpur until some of my friends visited this village in the Senchal Wild Life Sanctuary in Darjeeling district. This is an eco-village at an altitude of 8000 ft (approx) and 7 km away from Sonada. The village consists of 18 families totaling 88 people.

We planned a trip to Chatakpur in the third week of this December. Hill Cart road was closed and we had to take Rambi-Mangpu-Jorbangla Road from Siliguri. Chatakpur is 75 km from Siliguri. The last 12 km of the road is through a forest and covered with pebbles. The weather was sunny and Mt. Kanchanjangha was fully visible when we reached Chatakpur at noon.

The eco-village run by the Forest Department in collaboration with a village cooperative has four well furnished cottages. Each cottage has a water heater and a room heater. The temperature was hovering within 4 to 7 degree and at night below zero. At first sight, we loved the place. A pristine village within a forest and with a panoramic view of Mt. Kanchanjanga.

If you are at Darjeeling, to see the colorful sunrise on Mt. Kanchanjangha, you have to wake up at chilly night and rush to Tiger Hill. At Chatakpur, there is a view tower just ten minutes walk from the eco-cottages and the sunrise is as good as at Tiger Hill. In fact Chatakpur Hill is right next to Tiger Hill.

We witnessed a great sunset on Mt. Kanchanjangha and the next morning at 5:45 AM went up to the view point to experience the sunrise. The weather was fantastic. No cloud and no fog. We witnessed an unforgettable sunrise with the riots of colour on the Kanchanjangha range.

On the second morning, while we were having tea under one umbrella in the campus, I suddenly saw a panda peeping out of a tree and then it quickly disappeared. Then came a flock of Blue Magpie. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me. But later, we sighted so many birds ... Rufous Sibia, Black Redstart, Verditer Flycatcher, Himalayan Bulbul, Pipit, Long tail Shrike, Warbler, Prinia and so on. We trekked through the forest and saw many other birds which we could not identify. All along Kanchanjangha was with us.

We stayed at Chatakpur for two days. The Kanchenjungha range was visible all the time. On the third morning, we bade good bye to Chatakpur with the hope of coming back again.

The cost of accommodation of a cottage for two persons including food (bed tea, breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, dinner), guide charge, jungle entry fee and a cultural programme arranged by local girls is Rs.3000/- per day. Mr. Binod Rai, the manager, has separate arrangements of homestays for Rs.1000/- per person per day for food and lodging.

One thing, a trek through the forest should be accompanied by a guide as there are plenty of wildlife in the forest including Himalayan black bear.
